Nearly a decade after its release, Mole Man, the 2017 documentary produced by Tongal, is finding a powerful second life online.

The Documentary Girl

The heartfelt and deeply human documentary has recently reached a wave of new viewers thanks to content creator Christie Boschman, known to her audience as That Documentary Girl, whose Instagram recommendation introduced the film to thousands of people discovering Ron’s story for the very first time.

Directed by Guy Fiorita, Mole Man tells the remarkable story of Ron, a 66-year-old autistic man living in rural Western Pennsylvania who spent more than fifty years constructing an elaborate 50-room structure in his parents’ backyard. Built entirely without nails or mortar, Ron’s creation is assembled from scavenged materials he collected from the surrounding woods, balanced together through instinct and patience.

But Mole Man is far more than a documentary about unique architecture or outsider art. The film is an intimate portrait of family, care, independence, and neurodivergence.

After Ron’s father passed away, Ron continued living with his aging 90-year-old mother, forcing his siblings to confront difficult questions about his future and how best to support him. Complicating matters is Ron’s insistence that a mysterious abandoned mansion exists somewhere deep within the nearby forest, a place he believes could hold the financial answer to keeping him in the home he built and loves.

In response to the renewed attention from Boschman, Tongal filmed a new update conversation featuring director Guy Fiorita speaking with Ron’s cousin, John, about what happened to Ron after the cameras stopped rolling. This exclusive follow-up gives viewers new context surrounding Ron’s life, his family, and the lasting impact the documentary has had on audiences discovering it years later.

Part of what continues to make Mole Man resonate is its refusal to sensationalize Ron or reduce him to a simple label. The documentary approaches its subject with empathy and curiosity, giving viewers a chance to see the world through Ron’s perspective while also examining the very real challenges he faces.

The film’s rediscovery also reflects an interest in documentaries that spotlight unconventional lives with compassion. Mole Man stands out because of its patience and empathy, giving audiences time to sit with Ron’s story and appreciate the beauty in the way he sees the world.

Mole Man is currently available to rent on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and YouTube.
